Rapeseed oil has turned upward. What does it mean for buyers?

market watch cover 33

After last week’s drop, rapeseed oil is rising again, while Brent is falling and transport may ease in the coming weeks. For buyers, this is not a signal to panic, but to quickly verify offers, origin, Incoterms and payment terms.

This week the card is turning

Last week we highlighted a 9.2% drop in rapeseed oil and recommended using the buying window. Those who managed to lock in the price now have an advantage. This week, the market turned 4.1% upward and the situation is no longer so clear-cut.

That does not mean you need to immediately fix the entire volume. It does mean, however, that waiting without verified offers is a weak strategy. With commodities where the trend can change within a few days, the biggest risk is often not the price itself, but being unprepared to decide in time.

The most important market moves of the week

Rapeseed oil: the market has turned upward

Rapeseed oil increased by 4.1% and the Euronext August contract moved to approximately 525 EUR/t (last available quotation 524.50 EUR/t as of 3 August). After last week’s sharp drop, this is a clear signal that the market may no longer continue to get cheaper as comfortably as buyers would like.

Brent is falling: transport gets room for relief

Brent crude fell by 3.2% to 84.0 USD/bbl from the previous 86.8 USD. For buyers, this may be good news, because lower energy pressure gradually feeds through into truck transport, sea freight and broader logistics.

If your supplier increased the logistics surcharge in July because of fuel, you now have a legitimate argument for revising it. Do not push only on the commodity price. With delivered prices, part of the savings often lies precisely in transport.

Starches, flakes and sugar: stability does not mean certainty

Potato starch, corn starch, wheat starch, tapioca starch, T550 flour, potato flakes and sugar are being kept as STABLE this week. However, public spot quotations did not provide sufficiently reliable fresh data, so we are working with the last verified Rootie benchmark.

Before a binding offer, we recommend confirming especially availability, batch, expiry and logistics directly with the supplier. A stable benchmark is a good reference point, but not a substitute for a realistically confirmed offer.

Cocoa: stable, but with short fixation windows

Cocoa remains stable at approximately 4,867 EUR/t, but supply is short and fixations have narrow time windows. Therefore, treat this benchmark as directional guidance, not as a binding price. With cocoa, one simple rule applies today: do not make a long contract without supplier confirmation.

What it means by segment

Gastro, margarine production and fitness segment

If you buy rapeseed oil, this week is a suitable moment to ask for Q4-Q1 offers. The market is turning and waiting for another correction may be expensive. Compare at least two offers with different Incoterms and maturities.

Bakeries and confectioneries

Flour, starches and sugar are currently stable, but stability in public data does not mean that real offers have not moved. If you have a specific purchasing plan, it is worth asking directly. Rootie can prepare a verified benchmark for you within 24 hours.

Fitness and muesli segment

Maltodextrin remains stable at 998 EUR/t. If you have a contract up for renewal, now is a suitable moment for selective purchasing. The market is not yet showing volatility that would justify unnecessary hesitation.

Logistics across segments

The drop in Brent to 84.0 USD/bbl is an opportunity to open a discussion about transport. If suppliers increased delivered prices during the July fuel spikes, there is now room to ask for a revision. However, enter into long transport fixations only after confirming the route and delivery window.

Practical process for buyers

This week is not about a big strategy for the next six months. It is about three very specific steps that will give you a better negotiating position in the coming days:

  1. Request rapeseed oil for a volume of 60-200 t and compare at least two offers.
  2. For every delivered price, confirm origin, batch, validity, Incoterms, shipment date and payment terms.
  3. For open inquiries, send one combined message by company instead of several separate messages. It saves time for both you and the supplier.

Why Rootie makes sense this week

This week, we closed 3 contracts through the platform with an aggregated volume of 180 tons and an average saving of 8% compared with the spot price. That is exactly why Market Watch is not just a theoretical report. It is meant to be a basis for specific purchasing decisions that can be turned into real contracts and saved money.

Rootie can help especially when you need to quickly compare offers, verify a benchmark, set maturity or turn a purchase into an executable form without losing the entire week to operations.
